Pimax is known for their state of the art VR display technology, which delivers top tier visual performance. It's become one of the top choices for racing and flight sim enthusiasts, as well as many other genres.

We've had a Pimax Crystal Light in our office for a bit now and have some suggestions on best mounting locations, tips, and tricks to get the most out of your Pimax + ModMic combo. As the geometry of this and the Crystal Super are similar, we do not expect the advice to differ between the two.

Best Mounting Locations For ModMic USB & Uni

For the ModMic USB 2 and Uni 2+ we suggest mounting the ModMic here:

It's important to make sure the cable has enough slack that it doesn't pull on the mic when you turn your head! Similarly, make sure that any flexing when tilting or moving is not pushing on the "U" bend (#1 in the image above), which could lever the mic off the magnetic mount.

It's ok to have the mic a bit far from your face, you'll want to bend it inward a little bit and make sure the mic symbol is pointing towards you.

Use cable ties in the back to secure the mic cable. Depending on your setup, it is very likely you'll need a USB-A extension cable as well (sold separately). Be advised!

Best Mounting Locations For ModMic Wireless

Based on our tests there are two good locations to mount a ModMic Wireless:

Mounting point #1 is best in terms of ease to install, This mounting location and angle should provide excellent audio quality and avoids the cameras.

Mounting point #2 bows outward, making it a little harder to set up, but you can bend and curve the mic under the headset for a 'tighter' fit, which may help if you're concerned about hitting the mic while in use (for any games that have your hands near your face).

In both cases, be sure the mic is away from your breath stream, it's ok to mount the mic several inches from your face and off to the side, just make sure the mic icon is pointing towards you and it will still sound great!

Additional Tips & Tricks

  1. For Wired ModMics (ModMic USB 2 & ModMic Uni 2+) be sure to give the cable enough slack that turning your head does not pull on the mic.

  2. Similarly, for Wired ModMics especially, be sure that tilting, rotating, and general movement does not push on the strain relief or other rigid parts of the mic, which could 'lever' the mic off of the magnetic mount.

  3. All ModMics can be bent into any shape you can imagine (and some that you can't). Be sure to bend the mic into an ideal position that keeps the mic symbol pointing towards your mouth without the mic actually being in the path of your breath. Keep it as tight as possible to the frame of the Pimax unit for minimized torque and impact risk.

  4. When installing the ModMic be sure to install it as a whole unit, don't install the base clasp first and then attach the mic. This will ensure the mic starts by pointing in the correct direction, reducing the amount of bending required to get it into the perfect spot.

Where to Avoid Mounting a ModMic

There are also several locations we suggest avoiding.

Behind the screen you'll find a connection plate, due to the shape and materials of this area and the areas above and below it, the adhesive for the ModMic will have trouble sticking to it.

Additionally, the front face plate has 4 cameras, be sure the placement of the mic does not obstruct the vision of the cameras.

And finally, don't be a Squidward.
