ModMic Phone Compatibility

This article is partially outdated. For more up to date information please refer to our FAQ and helpdesk.

Have you ever wondered if it's possible to use the ModMic with a mobile device?

If you have and you hope the answer is yes, you're in luck! ModMics work with mobile devices, but there's a few extra steps you'll probably need to take along the way.

Our ModMics are designed specifically for use with PCs, Macs, or game console. However, recently our team performed a series of tests to confirm that Antlion Audio's ModMic line works with both Android and iPhone devices.

Before we begin, we've officially tested the adapters and phones mentioned or linked to in this article. If you find an adapter (or phone) that works better, cheaper, or specifically does not work please reach out to us by email so we can keep this information up to date.

iPhone Devices

ModMic Uni:
We tested the ModMic Uni with an iPhone 12 Mini. To get your iPhone connected to the ModMic Uni requires a Y adapter and lightning to 3.5 dongle. We believe any y adapter should work here, but be careful with the lightning to 3.5mm dongles, as there may be some that are not standard TRRS.
We tested the Apple lightning to 3.5mm adapter and it worked great.

Simply plug the Y adapter to the lighting dongle, then plug the ModMic into the Y adapter, and finally the lightning dongle into the phone to start using the ModMic. Rest assured, the mute switch has also been tested and confirmed to work, just in a case things get loud around you.

As far as we have tested, there won't be any need to set up and configure the connection in your phone's audio settings.

ModMic USB:
Next up, the ModMic USB and iPhone duo can connect via an adapter such as the following:

Just like the 3.5mm version, no additional steps should be required, just plug and play.

ModMic Wireless:
The ModMic Wireless can also use the same adapter above.

Sometimes when swapping devices the ModMic Wireless can lose pairing status. If the mic and receiver are both slowly blinking blue, re-pair the ModMic as follows:

After connecting the USB receiver to the adapter and turning the ModMic boom, press and hold the button on both the receiver and ModMic until they are both blinking rapidly. Then let go. The ModMic and receiver should return to solid blue lights.

Android

ModMic Uni:
If you happen to be using an Android phone with a 3.5mm input such as the Pixel 3a, you only need a y adapter to use a ModMci Uni. Again, we'd recommend first connecting the y adapter to the phone and then plugging in the ModMic Uni.

Just as with iPhones, the Android device should automatically recognize the mic and no additional settings changes were required in our test.

If your phone does not have a 3.5mm port and only has USB-C, you will need an adapter like this one:

This takes USB-C into separate ports for headphones and microphones.

ModMic USB:
We've tested to confirm the following product worked with the ModMic USB and our staff's Pixel 3a Android phone:

Both the cable adapter and dongle included in the link have confirmed to work.

ModMic Wireless:
Once again, the Wireless needs the same dongle as the ModMic USB, and we did test and confirm that the one linked above is compatible with both.

Not to repeat ourselves, but sometimes when swapping devices the ModMic Wireless can lose pairing status.

Additionally, any OTG Male-C to female-A should work for the Android and ModMic connection. However, we recommend the kind with a short flexible cable and not the solid adapter style. This will reduce the strain on the port and adapter when put in your pocket, thrown into a bag, etc.

Some Important Final Words:

Your mileage may vary! There's simply no way for us to test every phone with every adapter. While the above phone and adapter combinations worked perfectly for us, even a software update may cause this to become untrue at any moment. So if you encounter ANY combinations that do not work but feel like they should, please e-mail us from our support page and let us know.
