Nintendo Switch 2 Audio Compatibility and Setup with ModMic & Kimura Headset

After the recent Nintendo Switch 2 release, we are excited to report that all ModMic and Kimura products are fully compatible with the Switch 2.

In the guide below, we'll cover how to plug in our products as well as instructions on which settings need to be changed to use external microphones on the Switch 2.

Although the headphone connection methods have stayed mostly the same between Switch 1 and 2, multiple methods of connecting microphones and other devices have been added so the user can access the new "GameChat" feature. The audio jack now allows you to connected both a microphone and headphones simultaneously via a Y-adapter. Plus, a second USB-C port has been added next to the 3.5mm audio input, which accepts USB microphones. Just like the Switch 1, there are 2 USB-A ports on the dock that also allow USB microphones. In short, basically every USB or 3.5mm port can accept headphones, headsets, or microphones in any combination.

ModMic Wireless & ModMic USB 2

When docked, the wireless dongle or USB 2 termination can be attached to the Switch 2 in either the USB-A port or the USB-C port at the top of the handheld with a USB-A to USB-C adapter. This adapter is included with the ModMic USB 2 but sold separately with the ModMic Wireless.

For the ModMic USB, an extension cable (sold separately) may be helpful when using the switch in docked mode, unless you want to sit close to your TV like it's the 1990s.

The Wireless (top) or USB 2 (Bottom) both connect directly via USB-A when docked.

Both ModMic Wireless and USB 2 can connect using a USB-C (male) to USB-A (female) adapter to either the top or bottom port in handheld mode.

Kimura In-Ear Headset & ModMic Uni 2

The Kimura Headset and the ModMic Uni 2 are compatible with the audio jack both in docking and handheld mode, and need a Y-adapter to function properly. Y-adapters are included with all Kimura products, but sold separately for the ModMic Uni 2.

All 3.5mm ModMics or Kimuras can work with the Y adapter in either docked or handheld mode.

Audio Settings For External Microphones

The audio setup for these devices is pretty straightforward. Access the system settings on the home screen and go to the audio tab. Click on input microphone and a toggle it to the appropriate device, in this case a USB connected microphone.

For the ModMic Uni 2 and Kimura Headset, the steps are the same but you must click "Audio Jack" for the selected device.

You can also adjust the microphone volume, plus test the microphone to make sure it sounds good. This allows you to record a 5 second clip and listen back to it in your headphones.

GameChat

Communication works on the Switch 2 with a new feature called "GameChat". It allows you to create group chats with other Switch 2 users you are friends with. A user will invite a friend (or up to 12 friends) to a group chat using audio and/or video, in which they can listen & watch each other play separately or within the same game. Here is a video on how that function works from the Nintendo Life YouTube Channel.

Obviously, this whole method can be avoided using Discord or other potential work arounds. We also assume that some upcoming titles will have in-game audio which could bypass this app. We also want to mention, that the GameChat feature will require a Nintendo Switch Online Membership, but will be free until March 31st 2026.

Although GameChat is a little limiting, it is an exciting and necessary update to Nintendo systems. Hopefully Nintendo will eventually allow Switch 1 users to use this feature and encourage more communication between players in the future.
