Windows Keeps Adjusting My Mic Volume!

To be clear: This is not an "Antlion Audio" problem so much as it is a Windows / App problem, but that doesn't mean we can't help. We've recently had some customers bring up that windows is changing their mic volume and took some time to dig into it and find the cause and solution.

We identified two sources that could be responsible. There may be others, but odds are it will be something similar to one of these two.

Cause #1: Chrome

If you use Chrome and things like Google Meet or other Chromium based VOIP apps (like in-browser Zoom, etc) there's a hidden setting that lets Chrome adjust your mic volume automatically for the "best" result. Best being whatever IT thinks is best.

  1. In the URL bar, enter chrome://flags/
  2. Go to Allow WebRTC to adjust the input volume
  3. Set it to Disable

For everyone I have encountered so far, this has resolved the issue. However, if it doesn't there's one more setting to try.

Cause #2: Some app has permissions to control your mic volume

If that doesn't work some other app may be adjusting your mic volume. This setting disables allowing other apps to control your mic, but has a severe downside: You can not select which apps can do what. This means if you use our tutorial on reducing  background noise with RNNoise & EQ APO for instance, un-selecting this will prevent it from adjusting your mic as well, essentially disabling this app from working.

  1. Open Sound Settings and find the Sound Control Panel (it may be under Advanced Settings).
  2. Navigate to the recording tab and Right click on the mic in question, open the Properties menu.
  3. Navigate to the advanced tab and disable "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

Hopefully one of these two methods will resolve your problem, if you find another source of mic volume change, head over to our Discord and let our @staff know so we can keep this post updated!
